What You Can Bring on an Amtrak Trip—and What to Check First

Amtrak generally permits each traveler to bring one personal item and two carry-on items, subject to current size and weight limits. Travelers may check up to four bags where checked-baggage service is available: two free and two additional bags for $20 each, according to Amtrak’s official baggage overview.

Each standard checked bag may weigh up to 50 pounds and measure up to 75 linear inches. Bags measuring 76–100 linear inches carry a listed $20 oversized-baggage charge under Amtrak’s checked-baggage policy.

The crucial planning step is to confirm that your exact train and both your origin and destination stations handle checked baggage. Service is not available on every itinerary, and station-specific check-in deadlines apply.

Amtrak baggage allowances at a glance

These dimensions follow Amtrak’s carry-on policy, checked September 7, 2026. Carry-ons must fit the station sizer and be manageable for safe lifting; excess items can incur fees. Do not assume that an airline-compliant bag automatically meets Amtrak’s limits.

The published policy lists a $20 charge for each additional checked bag and a $20 charge for an oversized checked bag. It does not specify whether both charges apply when a third or fourth bag is also oversized. Confirm the total with Amtrak before traveling with a bag that falls into both categories.

Auto Train uses a separate baggage arrangement, while the operating carrier sets baggage rules for certain Amtrak Connection services. Special items and prohibited items also have separate requirements that may affect what you can bring and how it must be packed.

Check whether your itinerary accepts checked baggage

A free checked-bag allowance does not mean every traveler can use it. Checked baggage is offered only on certain trains, buses, Amtrak Connection services, and at stations equipped to handle it.

Use this three-part eligibility check:

1. Confirm the exact train or service. Do not rely only on the route name or assume every departure on that route has the same baggage facilities.
2. Confirm the origin station. It must accept checked baggage for the service you are taking.
3. Confirm the destination station. It must be equipped to receive checked baggage.

Apply this check to the actual services listed on your reservation. A station served by Amtrak is not necessarily a checked-baggage station, and a trip with multiple segments may have different baggage options on different portions.

Checked bags must be submitted before the train’s scheduled departure. Because the cutoff varies by station, consult the origin station’s detail page for the applicable check-in time rather than relying on a universal arrival-time rule.

If a train or bus in your itinerary does not offer checked baggage, Amtrak may accept the bag on another train or bus traveling to the same destination. This arrangement excludes firearms and is not automatic. Contact Amtrak in advance to ask whether the bag can travel separately, when it must be checked, and where it will be retrieved.

When you and your bag may travel on different services, follow staff instructions and keep the baggage claim check accessible rather than packing it inside another bag.

How to measure a checked bag and estimate the fee

Amtrak calculates checked-bag size in linear inches:

Length + width + height

For example, a bag measuring 30 by 25 by 20 inches totals:

30 + 25 + 20 = 75 linear inches

That bag reaches the standard checked-size ceiling. It must also weigh no more than 50 pounds to qualify as a standard checked bag.

A bag measuring 32 by 28 by 20 inches totals:

32 + 28 + 20 = 80 linear inches

That falls within the 76–100-linear-inch oversized range, for which the listed oversized charge is $20.

Bag count is calculated separately from size. If a traveler checks four standard eligible bags, the first two are free and the third and fourth cost $20 each:

$20 + $20 = $40

Estimate your baggage charges in three steps:

1. Count the bags. Determine whether any bag is the third or fourth checked bag.
2. Measure each bag. Add its length, width, and height to calculate the linear dimensions.
3. Weigh each bag. A standard checked bag must remain within the 50-pound limit.

Repack a bag over 50 pounds to meet the weight limit. Ask Amtrak about any item over 100 linear inches before bringing it. Do not assume that a bag outside the stated ranges can travel simply by paying another fee.

Also confirm the total charge when a third or fourth bag measures more than 75 linear inches. The listed policy does not make clear whether the additional-bag and oversized-bag charges are combined in that situation.

Prepare and check your bags without avoidable delays

Complete this checklist before leaving for the station:

• Verify that your itinerary is eligible for checked baggage.
• Read the origin station’s baggage check-in deadline.
• Weigh every checked bag.
• Add the length, width, and height of each bag.
• Review the applicable rules for special or unusually shaped items.
• Attach external identification to every bag.
• Pack each bag in a suitable container and secure it appropriately.
• Keep baggage claim checks readily accessible.

Every bag should have an external tag showing the traveler’s name and address. Free identification tags are available at Amtrak stations. Amtrak also advises travelers to use suitable containers and secure baggage with TSA-approved locks or zip ties.

When checked baggage must transfer between stations during an itinerary, Amtrak advises scheduling at least two hours of layover time. Its guidance also documents self-service trainside checked baggage only at Columbus, Wisconsin; Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and Winona, Minnesota. Treat the two-hour layover as planning guidance, not a guarantee that a transfer will succeed. Confirm the process in advance when the connection requires moving between stations rather than changing trains at the same station.

At a documented trainside-service station, a departing traveler tags the luggage for the destination, takes it to the baggage car, and hands it to an Amtrak crew member. The crew member provides a claim check. At the destination, present that check to retrieve the bag from the crew. Do not assume this service is available at other unstaffed or lightly staffed stations.

Exceptions that can change your packing plan

Auto Train exception

Auto Train does not offer ordinary checked-baggage service. Each traveler may bring two carry-on bags, and additional baggage may be packed inside the traveler’s vehicle. The vehicle and its contents cannot be accessed while en route.

Amtrak Connection services in the 7000 and 8000 number series follow baggage rules set by the operating carrier, which may differ from Amtrak’s standard rules. Amtrak also prohibits certain items onboard trains and in checked baggage, as explained in its official baggage policy.

Keep medication, travel documents, electronics, overnight supplies, and anything else needed during the Auto Train journey in your permitted carry-ons rather than inside the vehicle.

If your reservation includes one of the carrier-operated Amtrak Connection services described above, identify the operating carrier and review that carrier’s baggage policy. Do not assume Amtrak’s standard carry-on or checked-baggage allowance applies unchanged.

Special or oversized items may require different packing and additional fees. Check the rule for the particular item rather than applying the standard suitcase limits by analogy.

Review Amtrak’s detailed prohibited-items rules before packing anything that may raise a safety or security concern. An item permitted by an airline, bus company, or another rail carrier is not necessarily permitted by Amtrak.

Lost property, station help, and unavailable shipping

If you leave an item on a train or in a station, submit an Amtrak lost-item report. Provide enough identifying information to help distinguish the property, but follow the prompts in the official reporting process rather than treating any general checklist as a complete set of requirements.

For a missing checked bag, contact Amtrak for the correct claim procedure, and retain your claim check and travel records.

Temporary storage and baggage assistance are available at most staffed stations, but travelers should confirm station-specific availability, prices, hours, and limits before relying on those services.

Amtrak Express shipping is suspended until further notice, so it should not be treated as a backup for luggage that cannot travel under the passenger baggage rules.

Before departure, recheck current fees, station capabilities, check-in deadlines, and any carrier-specific or special-item requirements. Confirm the exact train and both endpoint stations first, then weigh and measure every checked bag.
