Canada’s “digital nomad visa” is not a separate visa category. Eligible remote workers use temporary resident status as visitors. IRCC’s guidance allows remote work for a foreign employer—or self-employment serving clients outside Canada—for up to six months at a time, subject to visitor requirements and the stay actually authorized at entry. IRCC digital-nomad guidance
For trip planning, settle three things before committing to a long rental: whether your work qualifies, which entry document you need, and how you will demonstrate that the stay is temporary.
Who can use this route?
The current guidance, updated May 26, 2026, requires sufficient documentation showing that your income is earned entirely outside Canada. Employees must be working remotely for a foreign employer; self-employed travelers must provide services exclusively to clients outside Canada. You must also demonstrate that you will not enter the Canadian labour market, can support yourself, and will leave when your authorized stay ends. IRCC visitor and work requirements
If you have Canadian clients, work for a Canadian employer, or have a mixed arrangement involving Canadian operations, do not assume that working online makes you eligible. Get qualified immigration advice before booking around that work.
A Canadian job is a separate decision: IRCC says you need a work permit before starting work for a Canadian employer unless a specific exemption applies. Visitor status is not general permission to take local employment. IRCC labour-market guidance
Which entry document do you need—and what does it cost?
Use Canada’s official visa/eTA checker. Requirements depend on citizenship, travel documents and whether you arrive by air, land or sea; not every traveler needs a visa or an eTA.
Published government fees as of October 10, 2026:
| Document | Purpose | Published fee |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor visa | Travel to Canada when a visa is required | From CAD 100 |
| Electronic travel authorization | Travel authorization for eligible air travelers | CAD 7 |
| Visitor record | Extend an authorized stay inside Canada | From CAD 100 |
There is no separate digital-nomad application fee. Visa applicants may also need biometrics, and processing times vary by country. Avoid nonrefundable bookings that depend on an assumed approval date. An eTA does not guarantee entry; you still need to satisfy the border officer that you qualify.
For a visa application, follow the official application instructions, including the personalized portal checklist and any additional local visa-office requirements. Explain your actual remote-work arrangement rather than treating this as an application for an unrelated special visa.
Prepare evidence of work, funds and departure plans
IRCC’s current digital-nomad guidance lists these possible supporting documents:
- A foreign employer’s letter or employment contract
- Pay stubs issued by that employer
- Service or sales contracts and invoices
- Foreign business registration
- Foreign income-tax documents
- Bank statements
These are examples, not a universal checklist. The evidence needs to establish your foreign-only income and qualifying remote work, whether you are applying for a visa, requesting a visitor record, or arriving at the border. IRCC documentation requirements
The guidance does not set a digital-nomad minimum monthly income. Standard visitor rules require enough money for your particular stay; the amount depends on its length and accommodation arrangements. Prepare a realistic budget and evidence of ties and plans that support your departure. Visitor eligibility
Family members need their own temporary resident status. Your eligibility does not automatically authorize a partner or child to work or study. IRCC family-member guidance
Six months is not a guaranteed stay
Most visitors can stay for up to six months, but a border officer can authorize less or more. Follow any departure deadline in your passport or visitor record. If you receive no passport stamp, IRCC’s visitor help page says the limit is six months from entry or until your passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first. Record your actual deadline after arrival—not the expiry date printed on your visa. IRCC stay limits, visitor-record deadlines
To stay longer, apply for a visitor record before your status expires; IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days ahead. A visitor record is not a visa and does not guarantee re-entry after leaving Canada. Do not build a longer stay around a presumed border-run reset. When to apply, visitor-record limits
Keep the first booking flexible
Start with one base and a shorter, changeable accommodation booking rather than prepaying the full potential stay. Confirm a usable desk, Wi-Fi, call-time noise, groceries and a nearby indoor alternative for off-work hours before extending.
Obtain your employer’s approval and arrange medical insurance covering Canada and your planned activities. Check tax obligations separately: Canada’s tax-residency assessment considers residential ties and the length, purpose and continuity of your stay, not simply your immigration label. If you need a dedicated longer-stay remote-work route rather than a temporary visit, compare the digital nomad visa countries before choosing Canada as your base.
