Where passport stamps have ended

33 destinations have a documented end to routine passport stamping for the travellers and crossings described in this guide. A further 22 have a narrower or reported stamp-free practice; their records explain the evidence and limits. The map keeps those groups separate: a country with automated gates is not necessarily a country that has stopped stamping passports.

The clearest distinction is between a policy and an individual journey. Singapore has ended routine entry and departure stamps for foreign visitors across its checkpoints. Peru records international-airport arrivals digitally, but travellers arriving by land still need an entry stamp. Select a destination for its entry and exit rules, the travellers covered, and the supporting sources. Grey means a no-stamp policy has not been established here. It does not mean every traveller will receive a stamp. The complete directory preserves 101 country and territory records, including mixed procedures and unanswered questions.

Europe’s shared EES change

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is the largest recent change. It began operating progressively on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026. For covered non-EU nationals making short visits, it replaces passport stamping at the external borders of 29 participating European countries. Entries and exits are recorded electronically, alongside identity, travel-document and biometric information. European Commission: Entry/Exit System.

This is one shared border system, not 29 unrelated national decisions. The relevant crossing is an external Schengen border: arriving from outside the area or leaving it. An ordinary journey between participating countries is not another EES entry. The European policy also should not be applied to every overseas territory associated with a participating state. EES does not cover everyone. EU citizens and nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are outside its traveller scope; specified residence-permit, long-stay-visa and qualifying family-member categories are also exempt. Australia: no routine stamps, but requests remain possible

Australia ended routine arrival and departure date stamps for travellers on 1 December 2012. The Australian High Commission’s FAQ expressly includes travellers generally, rather than describing only Australian passport holders. It also says a stamp can be requested. That makes Australia a confirmed no-routine-stamp destination, without implying stamps have become unavailable. Australian High Commission: passport stamp FAQ.

Movements into and out of Australia are recorded electronically. If you need a formal history of crossings, Home Affairs provides a travel-record request service. That is a different question from whether a visa is recorded electronically: a visa record alone does not show that a particular journey took place. Home Affairs: requesting movement records.

Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau

Singapore ended departure stamps for foreign travellers on 22 April 2019, including people cleared at staffed counters. Electronic visit passes replaced arrival stamps at Changi in October 2021 and extended to all checkpoints on 11 March 2022. A short-term visitor’s e-Pass records the visit allowance and final permitted day; it is sent to the email address supplied with the SG Arrival Card and can also be retrieved through ICA’s enquiry service. Hong Kong has used non-stamping visitor clearance since 19 March 2013. Arrivals receive a landing slip showing their identity, arrival date, conditions and limit of stay; routine departure clearance produces neither a stamp nor another slip. Immigration says exceptional circumstances may still require stamping. It also says officers will not add a passport stamp simply because a visitor wants a travel record: a statement of travel records is the separate service for that purpose. Macau introduced its non-stamping system on 10 July 2013. Non-resident travellers receive a printed Slip of Authorisation to Stay instead of an entry stamp, and are exempt from routine entry and exit stamping. The slip includes the permitted stay and should be retained. Macau’s official FAQ explains how to obtain a replacement if it is lost. When only the airport or e-gate is stamp-free

Argentina’s migration authority announced the removal of entry and exit stamps at air and sea crossings from 25 April 2022, with a progressive extension to other crossings. That announcement supports air and sea coverage. It does not establish that every land crossing has completed the same transition. Argentina’s migration authority announcement.

Peru makes the crossing distinction especially clear. UK government advice for British passport holders says international-airport arrival permission is recorded in a digital immigration document, the TAM virtual. It separately instructs land arrivals to obtain an entry stamp at the immigration checkpoint. Check the admitted stay in the digital record when arriving by air; do not assume the airport procedure applies to a bus journey over the border. Peru entry requirements.

Cambodia’s January 2026 v-Pass announcement describes a continuing pilot for foreign arrivals and departures at international airports and seaports, replacing immigration stamps and QR-code slips. The electronic pass can be retrieved through the stated email and arrival services. Taiwan’s approved e-Gate users do not need entry or exit stamps. Its immigration agency nevertheless allows them to request an official stamp at the immigration service counter on the same day. Eligibility for an automated channel, and the option to request a stamp, are part of the answer—not minor exceptions to omit from a map. Entry and exit need separate answers

A country can remove departure stamps while retaining arrival endorsements, or automate one traveller category while processing another at a counter. This guide therefore shows both directions together. A source that only describes arrival is not evidence of an identical departure policy.

Even a widely available automated channel can have important exceptions. UK Border Force says travellers using the Temporary Work–Creative Worker concession for an engagement of up to three months must see an officer and obtain a stamp. Its guidance tells someone who mistakenly uses an e-gate to see an officer before leaving the port. An unqualified “the UK does not stamp” label would hide that practical requirement. How this differs from the Reddit map

The map shared on Reddit groups destinations visually, but a single colour cannot explain nationality, border type, entry versus exit, or an optional stamp. The comparison below preserves the original map’s highlighted destinations and sets their claims beside the current sourced finding. A changed classification can mean a narrower source supports the rule, not that a government has necessarily reversed its policy.

Four differences are worth reading before treating the reference map as a travel rule:

  • Albania: its current border-control law retains entry and exit stamps for non-exempt foreign travellers, while exempting specified nationalities and residence-status groups. This supports a conditional classification, rather than the reference’s countrywide claim. Albanian State Police: Law 39/2025, Article 17.
  • Uruguay: airport biometric gates are documented, but that does not establish abolition at every crossing. The supplied thread itself contains January and March 2026 reports of ferry entry and exit stamps. Those are traveller reports, not official policy, but they contradict a confident blanket label.   • Jamaica: government material documents airport kiosks that issue landing records alongside other processing. It does not establish a nationwide prohibition on passport stamps.   • Iran: a named Interior Ministry spokesman was reported in August 2019 as confirming the end of tourist-passport stamping at land, sea and air borders. That is a substantive historical report, but it does not resolve every nationality and visa exception in 2026. Liechtenstein appears in both the phasing-out and open-border groups, giving 69 distinct named destinations across 70 category entries. Mexico appears orange on the map but is absent from the text list; its country record is assessed separately.

Keeping your entry record

What should I save if my passport is not stamped? Save the record issued for your journey and check the permitted stay. Singapore’s e-Pass and Macau’s authorisation slip are concrete examples; the important information is the admission record and its conditions, not whether it is printed inside the passport. Can I ask for a souvenir stamp? There is no universal answer. Taiwan documents a same-day stamp request after e-Gate clearance; Hong Kong specifically directs travel-record requests to a separate service instead of adding a visitor stamp. How current is this guide? The latest research pass is dated 23 September 2026. Country records show the source, the policy’s scope and, where documented, its effective date.
