To do Iceland on a budget, limit a one-week trip to Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and South Coast rather than the full Ring Road. Price transport and accommodation together, calculate fuel from the actual route, and keep enough money and time available to change plans when conditions deteriorate.

For a seven-night trip, start with the structure that fits your party:

• One traveler or no desire to drive: stay in Reykjavík, use city buses and price one or two excursions.
• Two or more travelers who want a road trip: compare a compact rental car plus rooms with a camper for the Golden Circle and South Coast.

Reykjavík Without a Car
