What the Lörrach commute actually involves
For a Messe-focused visit, the useful route is:
Hotel → nearby Lörrach S6 station → Basel Badischer Bahnhof → Messeplatz.
The published 2026 timetable shows typical journeys from Lörrach Hbf to Basel Badischer Bahnhof taking roughly 10–12 minutes. That is the train ride, not your hotel-to-fair journey. From Badischer Bahnhof, Basel Tourism lists an eight-minute walk to the exhibition centre, or trams 2 and 6 to Messeplatz. In rain, the tram is the practical alternative. You do not need to continue to Basel SBB for the main fair. Messe Basel connections
For a hotel close to an S6 stop, budget around 35–50 minutes door to door when timing your departure to a train. This is a planning allowance, not a measured hotel transfer: test the exact address and departure. Missing a train—especially on Sunday—can make the journey considerably longer.

Compare the whole stay, not just the room
Do not assume that being in Germany makes every Lörrach room cheaper. Compare identical dates, room standards and cancellation terms, including taxes and any breakfast you would otherwise buy. Convert both quotes into the same currency.

Subtract extra transport and a possible late taxi from the room savings, and account for any museum discounts you would actually use in Basel. Then ask whether the remaining saving is worth the repeated commute.

If you choose Lörrach, make each Basel visit one continuous outing: fair as the anchor, a nearby meal or indoor stop as the backup, and a return train earlier than the last available one.
