Check Your Packed Bag Against the Reported CT Opening

Measure your packed carry-on against the reported TSA CT opening, compare airline limits, and know what to expect if the scanner rejects it.

A fully packed 22-by-14-by-9-inch carry-on will probably fit a TSA CT scanner when it enters lengthwise with a 14-by-9-inch face. That is below the approximately 24.5-inch-wide by 16.5-inch-high opening reported by travel publications. It is not guaranteed: TSA does not publish a universal opening or bin size, and expanded, overstuffed, rigid, or irregular bags may not fit. If the bag cannot be screened in the available lane, you may be sent back to the airline to check it.

Scanner Fit And Airline Approval Are Separate Tests

The airline decides whether a bag qualifies for the cabin. TSA must be able to screen it before it enters the secure area. Passing either test does not guarantee passing the other.

A bag can meet an airline’s nominal allowance but still be difficult to screen because it is expanded, bulging, irregularly shaped, or incompatible with the scanner bin. A smaller bag may pass through the checkpoint equipment but still violate the operating airline’s policy.

The familiar 22-by-14-by-9-inch figure is a common domestic U.S. reference, not a universal airline allowance. A syndicated USA TODAY Network report uses that size and says a bag that cannot fit a CT scanner may have to be returned to the airline counter for checking. Its scanner dimensions come from secondary reporting rather than directly from TSA, so they are planning references, not nationwide limits (carry-on and CT scanner report).

Check the current baggage rules of the airline operating each flight. On a multi-airline itinerary, one carrier’s allowance may not apply to every segment. Read whether the published dimensions include wheels and handles, then measure the packed bag yourself.

No under-seat comparison can be made from the supplied evidence because it provides no universal under-seat dimensions. That space varies by airline and aircraft, so the checker marks it as unknown rather than inventing a limit.

The Reported Opening Is A Planning Reference

Travel publications report an approximate CT scanner opening of 24.5 inches wide by 16.5 inches high (AFAR’s CT scanner reporting). TSA does not publish that figure as a universal specification.

TSA says the CT units described in its Juneau guidance have slightly smaller entry tunnels than older checkpoint X-ray machines, meaning not all larger carry-ons fit. The agency recommends checking large carry-on items with the airline. It also requires every carry-on item, including a roller bag, to be placed in a bin on those machines (TSA’s Juneau CT scanner guidance).

The official guidance does not provide a nationwide tunnel size, tunnel depth, operating-clearance margin, or usable-bin dimensions. It does not establish that every scanner at every airport has the same opening. Equipment and procedures can differ among terminals, checkpoints, and lanes.

Use 24.5 by 16.5 inches to identify an obvious mismatch, not to prove that a bag will fit. A result at the exact reported edge remains uncertain because the bin, scanner model, required position, internal geometry, and officer’s instructions are unknown.

Compare The Entering Face Directionally

A suitcase has three outside dimensions, but the scanner entrance has two. When one dimension extends into the tunnel, the other two form the entering face.

Compare the face’s horizontal measurement with the reported 24.5-inch width and its vertical measurement with the reported 16.5-inch height. The limits are directional, not interchangeable.

For a packed 22-by-14-by-9-inch suitcase entering lengthwise, the 22-inch dimension extends into the machine. Its face is then 14 inches horizontal by 9 inches vertical. Both measurements are below the reported opening, making the bag likely to clear the entrance.

Consider a larger bag measuring 23 by 16.75 by 10 inches:

  • At 16.75 inches horizontal and 10 inches vertical, its face is within the reported opening.
  • At 10 inches horizontal and 16.75 inches vertical, it exceeds the reported height.
  • Any wheel, corner, pocket, or handle housing extending farther must be included.

That does not mean a traveler can select whichever rotation passes. The bin, tunnel depth, conveyor, scanner design, and officer’s directions may determine the permitted position. The fit checker displays all six faces so you can see whether the result depends on a particular orientation.

A bag is a safer candidate when its expected face is clearly below both reported dimensions. If one measurement exceeds its corresponding limit, prepare for alternate handling. If a face only matches the reported opening exactly, do not treat the result as dependable clearance.

Measure The Packed Bag At Its Farthest Points

Measure after packing the bag exactly as it will arrive at security. An empty suitcase can remain within its advertised dimensions while an expansion zipper, filled pocket, compressed clothing, or bowed panel changes its outside profile.

Place the bag on a hard, level surface. Measure the greatest outside length, middle dimension, and shortest dimension with a straight tape, yardstick, or other rigid measuring edge. Include:

  • Wheels and wheel housings
  • Fixed and folded handles
  • Feet, rails, frames, and rigid corners
  • Filled exterior pockets and expansion panels
  • Compression straps and loose hardware
  • Tags, pouches, pillows, jackets, or shoes attached outside
  • Every bulge in a soft-sided panel

Check each dimension near the top, middle, and bottom. The center is not necessarily the widest point. A wheel assembly can extend beyond the case, while one corner or front pocket may create the maximum profile.

Do not tighten the tape enough to compress a soft side. Record the bag’s resting shape. If someone must keep pressing on a panel to maintain the measurement, that is not a reliable size for screening.

If the result is close, close the expansion section, flatten exterior pockets, remove attached objects, secure loose straps, and move hard bundles away from bulging panels. Measure all three axes again. Fixed wheels, molded handles, frames, and rigid corners are not compressible.

Manufacturer measurements are useful when shopping, but they may describe only the case body. They also cannot predict how a soft bag changes when packed. Actual packed dimensions are more useful than a model table for this decision.

The Required Bin Can Be The Limiting Factor

Clearing the front opening is only part of the process. On the CT units covered by TSA’s Juneau guidance, the complete carry-on must sit in a screening bin. TSA does not publish the usable dimensions of those bins.

The bag must fit in the assigned bin, remain positioned as directed, and move normally into the scanner. The reported tunnel opening does not establish how much space is available inside the bin.

Common conflicts include a handle housing outside the main footprint, widely spaced wheels, an open expansion section, a rigidly packed front pocket, loose duffel straps, or hard corners that keep the case from settling. A lightly packed duffel may yield, but an overstuffed one can spread under its own weight. A hard case has a predictable profile but cannot flex around a tight point.

Tunnel depth is also unknown. The checker can compare the entering face, but it cannot determine whether the bag’s dimension extending into the scanner conflicts with unpublished internal geometry.

For a large, rigid, or unusual item, no home measurement can guarantee compatibility with an unidentified bin-and-scanner combination. Measuring still reveals obvious problems and shows whether a passing result depends on one rotation.

A Bag That Does Not Fit May Have To Be Checked

There is no single guaranteed outcome when a carry-on does not fit the assigned CT machine. An officer may arrange additional screening, send the item to a lane with different equipment, determine that it cannot proceed through that checkpoint configuration, or direct the traveler back to the airline.

Secondary reporting describes both manual or alternate-lane screening and returning to the airline counter to ask about checking the bag. Those are possible outcomes, not procedures promised at every airport. Scanner availability can vary among checkpoints and lanes (report on TSA guidance and equipment variation).

Before entering security with a borderline bag, keep identification, medication, keys, permitted valuables, and boarding documents easy to remove. Verify the airline’s current checked-bag terms and be ready to reorganize essential belongings if the airline accepts the suitcase for checking.

Do not force or compress the bag into a bin or machine. Follow the officer’s instructions. If your result depends on a favorable rotation or an exact fit, resolving it with the airline before joining the security line may be less disruptive.

Pack For CT And Standard Security Lanes

In a CT-equipped lane, laptops, other electronics, and liquids complying with the 3-1-1 rule can generally remain inside the carry-on. Procedures still vary, and the officer’s instructions control.

In a standard lane, TSA generally directs travelers to remove electronics larger than a cellphone, including laptops and tablets, and place them separately in a bin. Officers may also request separation of foods, powders, or materials that obstruct the image (TSA’s standard-lane screening instructions).

Keep electronics and compliant liquids reachable, avoid packing dense objects beneath tightly compressed clothing, and leave enough room to close the bag after an inspection. Securing straps and flattening pockets also reduces the outside profile used in the fit calculation.

Undeveloped film and film-loaded cameras need different handling. TSA advises requesting a hand inspection because CT screening can damage film (report on TSA’s film guidance).

A bag that fits the equipment can still receive additional screening. Scanner compatibility is not clearance from inspection, just one physical requirement for using that lane.

A 22-By-14-By-9-Inch Bag Is Likely, Not Guaranteed, To Fit

When those are the bag’s actual packed outside dimensions, including wheels and handles, a lengthwise position presents a 14-by-9-inch face. That is below the reported 24.5-by-16.5-inch opening.

The remaining uncertainty is the required bin, the assigned machine, tunnel depth, and local procedure. An overstuffed bag sold as 22 by 14 by 9 inches may no longer have those dimensions. Measure it rather than relying on its label.

Use two checks before leaving: confirm the operating airline’s current cabin allowance, then compare the packed bag’s expected entering face with the reported scanner opening. If the bag is expanded, bulging, rigid, unusually shaped, or dependent on one favorable orientation, reduce its profile or prepare to check it.
