Yes. Amtrak has electrical outlets for charging devices, including in Coach Class—you do not need to upgrade just to plug in. Amtrak lists at-seat electric outlets among its reserved Coach amenities, and specifies a 120-volt outlet at each seat on unreserved Coach services.

The useful packing rule: bring your wall charger and cable, rather than relying on a built-in USB port. Keep a charged power bank as a backup if you need your phone for tickets, directions or a connection after arrival.

Where are the outlets?

Expect outlets around your seating area, but do not assume the socket will be directly beside your armrest. Amtrak’s train-trip packing guide describes two outlets per seat pair and advises aisle-seat passengers to ask before reaching across a neighbor. That is a useful distinction: access to power does not always mean a separate outlet panel within easy reach of each passenger.

Once seated, locate the outlet and check that your device shows it is charging before settling into a long work session. Route and car layouts can differ; ask a crew member if you cannot find it.

Sleeping-car travelers should pack for limited sockets, too. In its roomette travel guide, Trains reports a single outlet in the roomette and notes that some outlets may be recessed. A compact multiport wall charger is a sensible option for two people charging phones, rather than assuming several sockets will be available.

Does Amtrak have USB charging ports?

Some equipment does. Amtrak’s FY2025 company profile specifically lists individual USB ports and power outlets on NextGen Acela trains.

That does not establish USB availability across the whole fleet. Pack a wall charger even if your phone charges by USB-C. For a laptop, bring its usual power adapter rather than counting on an onboard USB port to provide the connector or charging power it needs.

A small charging kit—and a backup plan

Keep these in the bag you will use at your seat:

  • Wall charger and the right cables. A multiport charger can reduce the number of plugs you need.
  • Charged power bank. Use it as your fallback, not as a reason to board with an almost-empty phone.
  • Offline essentials. Save your ticket, accommodation address and arrival directions before boarding.

If an outlet does not charge your device, check the cable and charger connections, then ask a crew member for help or whether you can move to another seat. Do not open outlet panels or run a cable across the aisle.

Keep this kit accessible rather than buried in your main suitcase. If you are deciding which bag to bring onboard, see the Amtrak baggage policy guide.
