Thailand’s visa route for digital nomads is the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), under its workcation category. It covers digital nomads, remote workers and freelancers. The key distinction: five-year visa validity does not mean five years of uninterrupted residence. Each entry allows up to 180 days, with one extension of up to another 180 days through Thai Immigration. Royal Thai Embassy, London

Requirements checked on 9 October 2026. Use the checklist of the Thai embassy or consulate handling your application before paying or booking.

What the DTV offers

Item Rule or planning consequence
Visa validity Five years, multiple entries
Stay per entry Up to 180 days
Extension Once per entry, for up to 180 additional days; apply through Thai Immigration
After the maximum extended stay Depart Thailand; another entry using the same DTV must be within its validity
Financial evidence For the bank-statement route, at least THB 500,000 or equivalent; check the mission’s required statement history and accepted alternatives
Application fee Check the handling mission’s local fee rather than assuming one worldwide price

The stay and extension rules are set out by the London embassy; the official e-Visa DTV checklist specifies financial evidence. Fee examples as of the check date are £300 in London and NT$11,000 in Taipei.

The THB 500,000 figure is a financial-evidence threshold—not a stated annual salary requirement. You still need separate evidence that you qualify for the workcation category.

Prepare the current document checklist

The official DTV workcation checklist lists:

  • Passport biodata page. Check the handling mission’s passport-validity requirement.
  • A photograph taken within the past six months.
  • Proof of permanent residence in the country where you apply.
  • Financial evidence: the last three months of bank statements showing a minimum balance of THB 500,000 or equivalent, or sponsorship letters where accepted.
  • Work evidence: an employment contract, employment certificate or professional portfolio demonstrating digital-nomad, remote-worker or freelancer status.
  • Criminal-record clearance from your country of nationality or the country where you apply.

Police clearance is on the central checklist; do not treat it as an optional extra. Its issuer and acceptable age differ by mission. London asks for a certificate issued within six months of submission; Los Angeles lists an FBI criminal certificate issued within three months. Los Angeles also requests current-location evidence and three months of savings or checking statements with an ending balance of at least THB 500,000. London requirements, Los Angeles requirements

Before obtaining translations or relying on sponsorship, confirm exactly what your mission accepts. A higher bank balance does not replace missing work or residence evidence.

Where and how to apply

Apply while outside Thailand. The official e-Visa portal expressly says applicants must not currently be in Thailand. Its process is: create an account, complete the application, upload documents, pay, then wait for the emailed confirmation. Print the approved confirmation for airlines and Thai immigration. Fees are non-refundable, and officials may request additional documents or an interview. Thai e-Visa portal

Being outside Thailand is not enough to make every embassy available to you. Residence and nationality restrictions matter: Madrid, for example, limits DTV applications to Spanish or Andorran nationals or permanent residents of Spain or Andorra. Madrid embassy

Choose the handling mission first, assemble its documents second, and keep flights and accommodation changeable until approval. Do not build the plan around a guaranteed processing time.

Work and family boundaries

The DTV workcation category is aimed at remote workers and freelancers; do not treat it as general permission to take a local Thai job. Thailand lists employment separately under its work-and-business visa routes, including labour approval or work-permit documentation. If your plan involves Thai employment or services for a Thai business, confirm the correct permission before starting. Official employment visa requirements

Spouses and children under 20 have a separate DTV category. Its checklist includes the principal holder’s DTV, relationship evidence, financial evidence and criminal-record clearance. Do not assume one approval covers the household. Official family DTV checklist

Build flexibility into the first stay

Book a short, changeable first accommodation block rather than committing immediately to a six-month lease. Test the actual room’s internet, desk, air conditioning and night-time noise before extending it. Keep an indoor workspace alternative for days when rain makes café-hopping impractical.

Keep these separate deadlines in your plan:

  • Before arrival: complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within the three days prior to arrival. The TDAC is an immigration form, not your visa. Official TDAC notice
  • For a stay beyond 90 days: follow the address-reporting requirement. A 90-day report does not extend your permitted stay. Thai Immigration guidance
  • Before your permitted stay expires: arrange departure or contact Thai Immigration about an extension. The DTV’s five-year validity does not replace the per-entry stay limit. London embassy’s stay rules
  • Before settling your stay dates: review tax exposure. Section 41 defines a Thai tax resident as someone present for 180 days or more in a calendar year, across one or several visits. You can reach that threshold without extending a single 180-day entry. It is a different clock from your visa allowance; get advice on your income and applicable treaty rather than assuming the visa makes earnings tax-free. Thai Revenue Code, Sections 39 and 41
